English Language Teacher Training

The English Language Teacher Training program (ELTT) is designed for pre- and in-service English language teachers, who want to improve their English language teaching and communication skills. The ELTT program integrates intensive English language instruction with state-of-the-art teaching methods classes.


Two-Week Program*

Students in the 2-week ELTT program take Topics in ESL (ESL). The course meets for 4 hours each day, 5 days per week (40 contact hours total). Students will also conduct a teaching demonstration and receive feedback from expert language teachers. Out of class, students will have the opportunity to participate in 2-3 cultural activities each week.

Four-Week Program

Students in the 4-week ELTT program take 2 for-credit courses – English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and Topics in ESL (ESL). In EAP, students improve their English language proficiency to improve their teaching. In ESL, students learn innovative language teaching methods.  Students will also conduct a teaching demonstration and receive feedback from expert language teachers. Classes meet 2 hours per day, 5 days per week (80 contact hours total). Out of class, students will have the opportunity to participate in 2-3 cultural activities each week.

Program Requirements

  • Students must currently be employed as English language teachers –OR– be enrolled in an (English) teacher education program.
  • Students should have English proficiency of a CEFR level B1 –OR– a test score of 45 on the TOEFL ibt, 5 on the IELTS, or 550 on the TOEIC. Students without official test scores may provide a letter from their institution establishing their English language proficiency.
    • Students who have neither a test score nor a letter may elect to enroll in the program and take the TOEFL itp at the IEP upon arrival. However, students who score BELOW a TOEFL itp of 450 will have to enroll in regular IEP courses.

Intensive 4-Week Program

Students in the INTENSIVE 4-week ELTT program take 4 for-credit courses – Teaching Methods in ESL, Language Use in American Universities, Assessment in Second Language Acquisition, and, Cultural Dimensions of SLA. During the 1st two weeks, students hone their English-language skills and learn innovative methods of teaching ESL. During the 2nd two weeks, students learn how to create classroom assessments and explore the sociocultural factors that affect language learning. Students will also conduct a teaching demonstration and receive feedback from expert language teachers. Classes meet 4 hours per day, 5 days per week (160 contact hours total). Out of class, students will have the opportunity to participate in 2-3 cultural activities each week.
